Science and Management Department
Overview
Science and Management Department is among of four academic departments under the Directorate of Academics at DMI. As stipulated by an Act of Parliament No. 22 of 1991, the department provides training, conducting research and consultancy.
Programmes under the Department
Currently, the department has three major areas of expertise: Procurement and supply chain Management, Shipping and logistics and Transport from. The programmes are available from NTA Level 4-9. Recently, the department has 23 academic staff (3 Senior Lecturers, 13 Assistant Lecturers and 7 Tutorial Assistants) with 2,836 students. On top of that, the department supports teaching modules in Marine Engineering and Maritime Transport departments for both National Technical Awards (NTAs) and Certificate of Competency (CoC) programmes.
Training Facilities under the Department
In facilitating Science and Management programmes, the Department has brand new full mission crane simulator that has 6 compatible modules: Forklift, Empty container handler, Rubber tyred gandry, Mobile habour crane, reachstacker and ship to shore gandry (SSG). On top of that, the department has computer laboratory with approximately 100 active computers. These facilities affect the learning and teaching processes.
Carrier Opportunities
Upon successful completion of the programme under this department, a graduate will have an opportunity to work in various organizations: Transport companies, Maritime education and training institutions, ports and terminals, maritime administrations, logistics agencies, marine survey companies, shipyards, entrepreneurships, clearing and forwarding companies insurance companies, industrial production companies and offshore platforms. Given the structure of the programme, a graduate can also successfully seek for employment in the international logistics job market.
