Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI) is a higher learning institution operating under the Ministry of Transport of the United Republic of Tanzania. Established by the Act of Parliament Cap. 253, the Institute is mandated to provide maritime education and training, conduct research and offer consultancy services to both public- and private-sector organisations.

For decades, DMI has served as a key institution in developing skilled workforce required to support maritime transportation, shipping, logistics, port operations, marine engineering, offshore activities and other sectors linked to the blue economy. Through its commitment to quality education and practical training, the Institute has contributed significantly to Tanzania’s maritime development agenda while supporting broader regional aspirations.

Recognizing that competent human resources are fundamental to maritime growth, DMI offers a wide range of academic and professional programmes designed to equip learners with knowledge, skills, and competencies required in today’s dynamic maritime industry.

The Institute offers programmes at various levels, including Master's Degrees, Bachelor's Degrees, Ordinary Diplomas, Technician Certificates, and Basic Technician Certificates. These programmes combine theoretical knowledge with practical training to ensure graduates are prepared for real-world challenges and opportunities.

In addition, DMI offers internationally recognised professional maritime programmes, including Chief and Second Engineer Officer, Master and Chief Mate, Officer in Charge of Engineering Watch, Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch, Electro-Technical Officer and Short Courses such as Personal Survival Technique (PST), Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR), Elementary First Aid (EFA), Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF). These programmes are delivered in accordance with international maritime standards, particularly the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), and are designed to prepare seafarers and maritime professionals for careers both at sea and ashore.

By continuously reviewing existing programmes and developing new ones, DMI ensures that graduates possess the competencies required to respond to technological advancement and meet the evolving demands of the global maritime industry

Beyond education and training, DMI contributes to maritime development through research, consultancy, and specialised technical services. The Institute conducts research aimed at addressing emerging challenges and opportunities within the maritime sector while generating knowledge that informs policy and industry practice.

Through consultancy services, DMI provides expert support to government institutions, private organisations, and maritime stakeholders seeking technical solutions and professional guidance.

The Institute also offers specialised services, including servicing of life-saving appliances, Marlins English Test services and crewing agency services. These initiatives contribute to improving maritime safety, operational efficiency, workforce development, and service delivery within the maritime sector.

One of the defining strengths of DMI is its unwavering commitment to quality assurance and compliance with international standards.

The Institute is registered by the National Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NACTVET) to offer programmes from NTA Level 4 to NTA Level 9. DMI is also accredited by the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), to deliver STCW programmes and maritime professional training.

Furthermore, DMI operates a Quality Management System Certified to ISO 9001: 2015 by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), demonstrating its commitment to continuous improvement, operational excellence, and customer satisfaction.

These accreditations and certifications ensure that graduates receive qualifications while enabling them to compete effectively in the global maritime labour market.

Graduates are employed in ports and terminal operations, maritime administrations, shipping and logistics companies, marine engineering firms, shipbuilding and repair yards, maritime education institutions, marine survey and inspection services, and insurance and marine risk management organisations.

Graduates of Certificate of Competency (CoC) programmes serve as marine officers on board ships and offshore installations, while graduates of STCW short courses are eligible for employment at sea as ratings.
