Maritime Transport Department is an academic department offering a comprehensive range of competence-based programmes leading to the award of certificates, diplomas, bachelor degrees, and master’s degree. The programmes are designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge required for successful careers across multiple aspects of the maritime transport, from operational positions to senior management.

Programmes offered under the Department

The department offers academic programmes in diverse fields including Maritime Transport, Nautical Science, Marine Operations, Maritime Safety and Security, Marine Environmental Management, International Trade, and Maritime Law.

The department also offers professional programmes in ship navigation in accordance with the STCW 1978 Convention, focusing on the standards required for seafarer training, certification, and watchkeeping. The programmes range from qualifications of Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OOW) to the ranks of Master and Chief Mate, leading to the award of certificates of competence from the Tanzanian maritime authority.

Teaching and Learning Facilities

The department’s teaching and learning facilities are equipped with modern resources which support learning by offering practical exposure to essential tools and techniques used in ship navigation, allowing students to develop and refine their navigation and maneuvering skills in realistic virtual environments. The facilities include modern Ship Handling Simulators, Live Radar and ARPA station, Chartwork station, Navigation Equipment station, Lifeboats, Rescue Boats, and GMDSS Simulators for maritime distress and safety communications.
