ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR DMI PROGRAMMES

1.0  National Technical Award (NTA) System

Entry qualifications for NTA system programmes are presented in the following sections:-

1.1 DEPARTMENT OF MARITIME TRANSPORT

1.1.1 Entry Qualification for Basic Technician Certificate (NTA Level 4) in Marine Operations (BTCMO)

  1. Holder of Certificate of Secondary Education (Form IV) with at least four passes at D grade in the following subjects; Mathematics, Physics/Engineering Science, Chemistry, Geography and  English; or
  2. Holder of National Vocational Award (NVA) level III in Engineering field (mechanical or electrical or civil) and must have Certificate of Secondary Education (Form IV) with at least 2 passes in any non-religious subjects.

           Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.1.2 Entry Qualification for Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in Maritime Transport and Nautical Science (TCMTNS)

A Holder of  Basic Technician Certificate (NTA Level 4) in Marine Operations (BTCMO)

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.1.3 Entry Qualification for Ordinary Diploma in (NTA Level 6) in Maritime Transport and Nautical Science (ODMTNS)

A Holder of Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in Maritime Transport and Nautical Science (TCMTNS).

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.1.4 Entry Qualification for Bachelor Degree (NTA Level 7/8) in Maritime Transport and Nautical Science – (BMTNS)

  1. A Holder of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations with at least two principal passes from any of the following subjects: Advanced Mathematics, Physics, Geography and Chemistry with an aggregate of 4 points and at least 3 passes at ‘O’ level in the following subjects: Mathematics, Physics/Engineering Science, Geography, Chemistry or English; or Foundation  Programme  of  the  Open University of Tanzania (OUT)  with  a minimum GPA of 3.0
  2. A Holder of an Ordinary Diploma in Maritime Transport or Maritime Transport and Nautical Science or Master Fishermen with at least a GPA of 3.0 from a recognized Institution and at least 3 passes at ‘O’ level.

Duration of the Course:

Four (4) academic years organized in semester wise.

1.2 DEPARTMENT OF MARINE ENGINEERING

1.2.1 Entry Qualification for Basic Technician Certificate (NTA Level 4) in Naval

    Architecture and Offshore Engineering (BTCNAOE)

  1. Holder of Certificate of Secondary Education (Form IV) with at least four passes at D’s grade in the following subjects; Mathematics, Physics/Engineering Science, Chemistry, Geography and  English; or
  2. Holder of National Vocational Award (NVA) level III in Engineering field (mechanical or electrical or civil) and must have Certificate of Secondary Education (Form IV) with at least 2 passes excluding religious subjects.

     Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.2.2 Entry Qualification for Basic Technician Certificate (NTA Level 4)  in Mechanical And Marine Engineering (BTCMME)

  1. Holder of Certificate of Secondary Education (Form IV) with at least four passes at grade D in any of following subjects; Mathematics, Physics/Engineering Science, Chemistry and English; or
  2. Holder of National Vocational Award (NVA) level III in Mechanical Engineering and must have Certificate of Secondary Education (Form IV) with at least 2 passes excluding religious subjects.

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.2.3 Entry Qualification for Basic Technician Certificate (NTA Level 4) in Oil And Gas Engineering   (BTCOGE)

  1. Holder of Certificate of Secondary Education (Form IV) with at least four passes at grade D in any of following subjects; Mathematics, Physics/Engineering Science, Geography, Chemistry and English; or
  2. Holder of a relevant Certificate of Competence III.

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.2.4 Entry Qualification for Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in Marine Engineering (TCME)

A Holder of  Basic Technician Certificate (NTA Level 4) in Marine Operations (BTCMO).

1.2.5 Entry Qualification for Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5)  in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering (TCNAOE)

A Holder of Basic Technician Certificate (NTA Level 4) in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering (BTCNAOE)

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.2.6 Entry Qualification for Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in Mechanical And Marine Engineering (TCMME)

A Holder of Basic Technician Certificate in Mechanical and Marine Engineering (NTA Level 4)

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.2.7 Entry Qualification for Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in Oil And Gas Engineering   (TCOGE)

Holder of Basic Technician Certificate in Oil and Gas Engineering (NTA Level 4) (BTCOGE)

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.2.8 Entry Qualification for Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) in Marine Engineering (ODME) –NTA Level 6

A Holder of Technician Certificatein (NTA Level 5) Marine Engineering (TCME)

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.2.9 Entry Qualification for Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering (ODNAOE)

A Holder of Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering (TCNAOE)

     Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.2.10 Entry Qualification for Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) in Mechanical And Marine Engineering (ODMME)

A holder of Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in Mechanical and Marine Engineering (TCMME).

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.2.11 Entry Qualification for Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) in Oil And Gas Engineering   (ODOGE)

A holder of Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in Oil and Gas Engineering (TCOGE).

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.2.12 Entry Qualification for Bachelor Degree (NTA Level 7/8) in Marine Engineering Technology –(BMET)

  1. A Holder of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations with at least two principal passes with a total of 4.0 points from any of the following subjects: Physics, Advanced Mathematics and Chemistry subjects and at least 3 Passes at ‘O’ level in the following subjects: Mathematics, Physics/Engineering Science, Geography, Chemistry or English;    OR  Foundation Programme of the OUT with a minimum GPA of 3.0 OR
  2. A Holder of Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) in either Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering with at least a GPA of 3.0 from a recognized institution and at least 3 Passes at ‘O’ level in in the following subjects: Mathematics, Physics/Engineering Science, Geography, Chemistry or English.

     Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is 4 academic years organized in two semesters.

1.2.13 Entry Qualification for Bachelor Degree (NTA Level 7/8) in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering (BNAOE)

  1. A Holder of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with at least two principal passes with a total of 4.0 points in the following subjects; Physics, Advanced Mathematics and Chemistry; Or
  2. A holder of an Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) in either Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering, Marine Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with at least a GPA of 3.0 from a recognized institution and at least 3 passes at ‘O’ level in in the following subjects: Mathematics, Physics/Engineering Science, Geography, Chemistry or English.

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is 3 years organized in semesters wise.

1.2.14 Entry Qualification for Bachelor Degree (NTA Level 7/8) in Mechanical And       Marine Engineering (BMME)

  1. A Holder of an Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) in Mechanical and Marine Engineering with al lest a GPA of 3.0 from recognized institution; Or
  2. A Holder of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with at least two principal passes with a total of 4.0 points in any of the following subjects; Physics, Advanced Mathematics and Chemistry and who has undergone one-year general course; Or
  • A Holder of and Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) in either Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering with at least GPA of 3.0 from recognized institution and who has undergone one-year General Course.

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is 4 academic years organized in semester wise.

1.2.15 Entry Qualification for Bachelor Degree (NTA Level 7/8) in Oil And Gas Engineering   (BOGE)

  1. A Holder of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with at least two principal passes with a total of 4.0 points in any of the following subjects: Physics, Advanced Mathematics, Geography and Chemistry; Or Foundation Programme of the OUT with a minimum GPA of 3.0. or
  2. A Holder of an Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) in Oil and Gas Engineering with at least a GPA of 3.0 from recognized institution; Or
  • A Holder of an Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) either in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering, Marine and Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering with at least a GPA of 3.0 from a recognized institution.

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is 4 academic years organized in semester wise.

1.2.16 Entry Qualification for Bachelor Degree (NTA Level 7/8) in Mechatronics Engineering (BME

  1. A Holder of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education examination with at least two principal passes with a total of 4.0 points in any of the following subjects: Physics, Advanced Mathematics, and Chemistry or Foundation Programme of the OUT with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • A Holder of an Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) either in Marine Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering with at least a GPA of 3.0 from a recognized institution.

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is 4 academic years organized in two semesters.

1.3 DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT

1.3.1 Entry Qualification for Basic Technician Certificate (NTA Level 4) in Shipping and Logistics Management (BTCSLM)

  1. A Holder of Ordinary Level Secondary Education Certificate with at least four passes at D’s grade excluding religious subjects; or
  2. A Holder of National Vocational Award (NVA) level III and must have Certificate of Secondary Education (Form IV) with at least 2 passes excluding religious subjects.

              Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.3.2 Basic Technician Certificate (NTA Level 4) in Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management (BTCPLSM)

  1. A Holder of Ordinary Level Secondary Education Certificate with at least four passes at D’s grade excluding religious subjects; or
  • A Holder of National Vocational Award (NVA) level III and must have Certificate of Secondary Education (Form IV) with at least 2 passes excluding religious subjects.

 Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

  • Basic Technician Certificate (NTA Level 4) in Transport and Supply Chain Management (BTCTSM)
  1. i) A Holder of Ordinary Level Secondary Education Certificate with at least four passes at D’s grade excluding  religious subjects; or
  2. ii) A Holder of National Vocational Award (NVA) level III and must have Certificate of Secondary Education (Form IV) with at least 2 passes excluding religious subjects.

  Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.3.4 Basic Technician Certificate (NTA Level 4) in Cargo Tallying and Supply Chain Management (BTCCTSM)

  1. A holder of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) with at least four passes excluding religious subjects

Or

  1. A holder of National Vocational Award (NVA) level III and must have at least two passes in the certificate of Secondary Education Examinations (CSEE)

  Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.3.5 Entry Qualification for Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5)  in Shipping and Logistics Management (TCSLM)

  1. A Holder of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with at least 1 principal pass in non-religious subjects; or
  2. A Holder of Basic Technician Certificate in Shipping and Logistics Management or Logistics and Transport Management; or
  • A Holder of Basic Technician Certificate (NTA Level 4) in Marine Operations (BTCMO).

                Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.3.6 Entry Qualification for Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in Procurement, Logistics And Supply Chain Management (TCPLSM)

  1. A Holder of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with at least 1 principal pass in non-religious subjects; or
  2. A Holder of Basic Technician Certificate in Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management or Logistics and Supply Chain Management or Shipping and Logistics Management or Logistics and Transport Management; or
  • A Holder of Basic Technician Certificate in Marine Operations (BTCMO).

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.3.7 Entry Qualification for Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in Transport And Supply Chain Management (TCTSM)

  1. A Holder of Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with at least 1 principal pass in non-religious subjects or
  2. A Holder of Basic Technician Certificate in Transport and Supply Chain Management or Logistics and Supply Chain Management or Shipping and Logistics Management or Logistics and Transport Management; or
  • A Holder of Basic Technician Certificate in Marine Operations (BTCMO).

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.3.8 Entry Qualification for Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) in Shipping and Logistics Management (ODSLM)

A Holder of Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in Shipping and Logistics Management (TCSLM).

Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.3.9 Entry Qualification for Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) in Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management (ODPLSM)

A Holder of Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management (TCPLSM)

     Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.3.10 Entry Qualification for Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) in Transport and Supply Chain Management (ODTSM)

A Holder of Technician Certificate (NTA Level 5) in Transport and Supply Chain Management (TCTSM)

     Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

1.3.11 Entry Qualification for Bachelor Degree (NTA Level 7/8) in Shipping and Logistics Management (BSLM)

  1. A Holder of advanced certificate of secondary education examination (ACSSE) with a total of 4.0 points from two principal passes of which one of the subject is either Mathematics, or Physics/Engineering Science, or Chemistry, or Economics, or Geography, or Biology, or Commerce; or Foundation Programme of the OUT with a minimum GPA of 3.0. OR
  2. A Holder of ordinary diploma (NTA level 6) in shipping and logistics management, logistics and transport, maritime transport, master fisherman, marine engineering, procurement and logistics, freight clearing and forwarding and transport management with at least a GPA of 3.0; or
  • A Holder of full technician certificate (FTC) with an average grade of B; or
  1. A Holder of diploma in education with an average grade of B+ for science or commerce subjects.

                     Duration of the Course

The duration of the course is 3 years organized in semester wise.

1.3.12 Entry Qualification for Bachelor Degree (NTA Level 7/8) in Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management – (BPLSM)

  1. A Holder of advanced certificate of secondary education examination (ACSSE) with a total of 4.0 points from any two principal passes of which one of the subject is either Mathematics, or Physics/Engineering Science, or Chemistry, or Economics, or Geography, or History, or Biology, or Commerce; or Foundation Programme of the OUT with a minimum GPA of 3.0, or
  2. A Holder of Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) in Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management/freight Clearing and forwarding/Transport with at least a GPA of 3.0; or
  • Full Technician Certificate (FTC) with an average grade of B; or
  1. A Holder of Diploma in Education with an average grade of B+ for science or  commerce subjects.

  Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is 3 years organized in semester wise.

1.3.13 Entry Qualification for Bachelor Degree (NTA Level 7/8) in Transport and Supply Chain Management – (BTSM)

A Holder of advanced certificate of secondary education examination (ACSSE) with a total of 4.0 points from two principal passes of which one of the subject is either Mathematics, or Physics/Engineering Science, or Chemistry, or Economics, or Geography, or History, or Commerce; or Foundation Programme of the OUT with a minimum GPA of 3.0. or

  1. A Holder of Ordinary Diploma (NTA Level 6) in Transport and Supply Chain Management/Shipping and Logistics  with at least a GPA of 3.0; or
  2. Full Technician Certificate (FTC) with an average grade of B; or
  • A Holder of Diploma in Education with an average grade of B+ for science or commerce subjects.

Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is 3 years organized in semester wise.

1.3.14 Entry Qualification for Master’s  Degree (NTA Level 9) in Shipping Economics and Logistics (MSEL)

  1. A Holder of Bachelor Degree in Shipping and Logistics Management/ Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management/ Bachelor Degree in Maritime Transport and Nautical science, Marine Engineering, Science, Engineering, Business administration, Economics, Accountancy and Mathematics/Statistics with minimum GPA 2.7; Or
  2. Holder of Advanced Diploma in Shipping and Logistics Management/Transport/Port/Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management/ Maritime Transport and Marine Engineering with minimum GPA 3.0; Or
  • Holder of unclassified Bachelor Degree in Shipping and Logistics Management/ Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management/ Bachelor Degree in Maritime Transport and Nautical science, Marine Engineering, Science, Engineering, Business administration, Economics, Accountancy and Mathematics/Statistics with a distinction.

            Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is years (2) academic year organized in four semesters.

1.3.15 Entry Qualification for Master’s  Degree (NTA Level 9) in Transport  and Supply Chain Management (MTSM)

  1. A Holder of Bachelor Degree in Shipping and Logistics Management/ Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management/ Bachelor Degree in Maritime Transport and Nautical science, Marine Engineering, Science, Engineering, Business administration, Economics, Accountancy and Mathematics/Statistics with minimum GPA 2.7; Or
  2. Holder of Advanced Diploma in Shipping and Logistics Management/Transport/Port/Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management/ Maritime Transport and Marine Engineering with minimum GPA 3.0; Or
  • Holder of unclassified Bachelor Degree in Shipping and Logistics Management/ Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management/ Bachelor Degree in Maritime Transport and Nautical science, Marine Engineering, Science, Engineering, Business administration, Economics, Accountancy and Mathematics/Statistics with a distinction.

            Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is years (2) academic year organized in four semesters.

  • Certificate of Competency Programmes

Entry qualifications for Certificate of Competency programmes are presented in the following   sections. However, eligibility for admission is subject to approval from TASAC.

  •      Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch on Ships less than 750kW                                     

A  holder Certificate Of Secondary Education Examination and has not less than 36 months seagoing service period.

Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is 6 months.

  •      Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on Ships less than 500GT

A holder Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with 36 months seagoing service as rating or Ordinary Diploma in Maritime Transport or Advanced Certificate of Secondary School education with 6 months of approved seagoing service.

Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is 6 months.

  •      Electro-Technical Officer

A candidate who applies for this course must meet the entry requirements as explained in the two routes below:

A:        36 month seagoing service route

A holder of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with 4 passes including Mathematics, Physics and English or a holder of a Certificate in Marine Engineering NTA level 5 and has not less than 36 months of seagoing service; Or

B:        12 month seagoing service route

A holder of ACSE with principal passes in Advanced Mathematics and Physics or a holder of a relevant NTA level 6 of education.

The candidate under this route will undergo a period of an approved seagoing service of not less than 12 months.

Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

  • Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch

A candidate who applies for this course must meet the entry requirements as explained in the two routes below:

A:        36 month seagoing service route

A holder of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with 4 passes including Mathematics, Physics and English or a  A Holder of a Technician Certificate in Marine Engineering NTA level 5; Or

A Holder of CoC for Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch less than 750 kW and has not less than 36 months of seagoing service; Or

B:        12 month seagoing service route

A holder of ACSE with 2 principal passes in any of the following subjects: Advanced Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry or

A Holder of NTA level 6 of maritime education in engineering fields and OOEW< 750kW.

The candidate under this route will undergo a period of an approved seagoing service of not less than 12 months.

Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semester.

  • Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch

A holder of Certificate of Secondary Education Examination with 4 passes including Mathematics, Physics and English and has 36 months seagoing service as rating or Ordinary Diploma in Maritime Transport or Advanced Certificate of Secondary School education with 12 months of approved seagoing service or holder of Officer in Charge of a Navigationa Watch on Ships less than 500GT with 36 months sea service on board ship.

Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

  • Master on Ships less than 500GT

A holder of Officer In Charge of a Navigation Watch on Ships less than 500GT and have not less than 12 months of seagoing serviced on board ship as Officer in Charge of Navigation Watch on Ships less than 500GT.

Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

  • Master and Chief Mate on Ships Between 500GT and 3000GT

A holder of Certificate of Competency as officer in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more and has not less than 12 months of approved seagoing service.

Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is 6 months.

  • Chief Engineer Officer and Second Engineer Officer on Ships between 750kW and 3000kW

A holder of Certificate of Competency as officer in charge of an engineering watch on seagoing ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 750 kW propulsion power or more and has not less than 12 months of seagoing service while qualified as officer in charge of an engineering watch.

To qualify as a chief engineer officer a candidate must have not less than 24 months seagoing service of which not less than 12 months of such sea service has been served as second engineer officer.

Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is 18 weeks.

  • Master and Chief Mate

A holder of Certificate of Competency as officer in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more and has not less than 12 months of approved seagoing service.

To qualify as a Master a Candidate must have not less than 36 months seagoing service; however this period may be reduced to not less than 24 months if not less than 12 months of such sea service has been served as Chief Mate.

Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.

  • Chief Engineer Officer and Second Engineer Officer

A holder of Certificate of Competency as officer in charge of an engineering watch on seagoing ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 750 kW propulsion power or more and has not less than 12 months of seagoing service while qualified as officer in charge of an engineering watch.

To qualify as a chief engineer officer a candidate must have not less than 36 months seagoing service; however this period may be reduced to not less than 24 months if not less than 12 months of such sea service has been served as second engineer officer.

Duration of the Course:

The duration of the course is one (1) academic year organized in two semesters.
